Unit PT Event: Covey Time Management Matrix + Yoga

12/17/2025

Today I'll be leading mini-yoga sessions in a unit PT event. Yoga will be one of four stations supporting the adaptation of the Covey Time Management Matrix. Yoga can integrate easily with a military career, PT exercise and recovery, and overall mindset/wellbeing.

Breathing, especially deep breathing, calms the nervous system—even just one breath can make a difference. The mind can become more calm, clear, and focused. Couple breathwork with physical exertion and stress release, the whole person can experience self-awareness, helping to acknowledge essential tasks over non-essential.

Yoga is also the perfect complement to strength training and weightlifting routines. We hear that yoga increases flexibility, a common “side-effect” of a steady practice, but what this actually means is an increase in overall joint mobility.

Having a full range of motion in the body can
  • increase your strength,
  • help you to balance and properly align the body in weightlifting,
  • lead to less injury and inflammation,
  • and decrease soreness with quicker recovery and gain.

What to Expect in Your First Yoga Class

1/17/2025

If you’re new to the physical practice of yoga, coming to your first class can be intimidating. Your monologue (sanskrit: citta vritti) will do its very best to conjure nervousness or anxiety, which will create fanciful stories of contortionist yogis, Olympic trials for flexibility, a severely branded fashion show, and so on. I’m here to tell you this is all a daydream.

Preparing for Class
  • Find clothing that allows you to move freely. It can be stretchy or loose, but not itchy or restricting. (Please note DoD facilities have a dress code.)
  • Bring warm clothes and socks to layer at the end of class. In the cooler months the body may get too cool after the physical practice closes.

Arriving to Class
  • Arrive early to check-in. Make your way to the class room.
  • If you'd like, meet the teacher and discuss any injuries or concerns.
